Search for Shopify pricing and you’ll find the same three numbers everywhere: $39, $105, $399. Those are the American prices. If you’re running a business in Toronto, you pay $49, $132 and $517 CAD per month — and almost none of the guides ranking for “Shopify pricing” bother to mention it.
That gap matters, because it compounds. A Toronto store on the Grow plan pays roughly $1,584 CAD a year against the $1,260 figure most articles quote. And that’s before payment processing, apps, themes, or the build itself.
Here’s what a Shopify store actually costs in Canada in 2026, in Canadian dollars, with every platform figure taken straight from Shopify’s own Canadian pricing page.
- Shopify’s Canadian plans cost $49 / $132 / $517 CAD monthly, or $37 / $99 / $389 on annual billing — materially more than the USD figures most guides publish (Shopify Canada, September 2026).
- Canadian merchants get a uniquely cheap in-person rate: Interac at 0% + 15¢, versus 2.6% for cards. No competitor guide mentions this.
- Using a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments costs an extra 2% on Basic — about $4,800 CAD a year on $20,000/month in sales.
- Upgrading from Basic to Grow only pays for itself above roughly $31,000/month in card sales. Below that, you’re buying features you aren’t recovering on rates.
What Does Shopify Itself Cost in Canada?
As of September 2026, Shopify’s Canadian pricing page lists four tiers. The monthly column is what you pay billing month-to-month; the annual column is the effective monthly cost when you prepay for a year, which runs about 25% cheaper.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Online card rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $49 CAD/mo | $37 CAD/mo | 2.8% + 30¢ |
| Grow | $132 CAD/mo | $99 CAD/mo | 2.6% + 30¢ |
| Advanced | $517 CAD/mo | $389 CAD/mo | 2.4% + 30¢ |
| Plus | from $3,400 CAD/mo | — | 2.15% + 30¢ |
For most Toronto small businesses the real decision sits between Basic and Grow. Advanced only earns its keep at substantial volume, and Plus is enterprise territory.
Shopify’s scale explains why it dominates these conversations. In September 2026, W3Techs measured Shopify at 32.1% of all e-commerce systems in use across the sites it tracks. Shopify’s own Q2 2026 filing with the SEC reported gross merchandise volume of US$115.6 billion for the quarter, up 32% year over year.
The Payment Processing Costs Nobody Mentions
Your subscription is the small number. Payment processing is where Canadian stores quietly lose margin — and there are two Canada-specific details worth real money.
Interac is dramatically cheaper than cards
If you sell in person as well as online — a Toronto retailer with a storefront, a market stall, a studio — Shopify charges 0% + 15¢ for Interac transactions on Basic, Grow and Advanced, dropping to 0% + 10¢ on Plus. Compare that to 2.6% for an in-person card tap.
On an $80 sale, Interac costs you 15 cents. The same sale on a credit card costs $2.08. We have not found a single competitor guide that mentions this, and for a bricks-and-mortar Toronto business it’s one of the strongest arguments for encouraging debit at the counter.
The third-party gateway penalty, in actual dollars
Every guide lists Shopify’s third-party payment gateway fee as a footnote: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus. Almost none of them convert it into money.
So: a Toronto store on Basic doing $20,000 CAD a month through a gateway that isn’t Shopify Payments pays an extra $400 a month — $4,800 a year — purely for the privilege of not using Shopify’s processor. That fee sits on top of whatever your chosen gateway charges you.
What this means in practice
Unless you have a contractual reason to use a specific processor, Shopify Payments is almost always the correct choice for a Canadian store. The penalty for going elsewhere is large enough to fund a meaningful chunk of your build.
When Does Upgrading Your Shopify Plan Actually Pay Off?
Here’s a calculation nobody seems to publish. Shopify’s higher plans cost more per month but charge less per transaction. So there’s a revenue threshold where upgrading starts saving you money — and below it, you’re paying for features you aren’t recovering.
Using annual billing figures, your true monthly cost is the subscription plus the card rate applied to your card revenue:
- Basic → Grow: the subscription gap is $62/month, and the rate saving is 0.2%. Breakeven is at $31,000 CAD/month in online card sales.
- Grow → Advanced: the subscription gap is $290/month against the same 0.2% saving. Breakeven is at $145,000 CAD/month.
The practical upshot: a Toronto store doing under about $31,000 CAD a month in card sales should stay on Basic and put the difference toward the build or marketing. Upgrade for the features if you genuinely need them — Grow adds more staff accounts and lower rates — but don’t upgrade expecting the transaction savings to cover it until you’re past that threshold.
What Does Shopify Development Cost in Toronto?
Now the honest part. There is no credible independent benchmark for what Shopify development costs in Canada. We went looking. Every figure in circulation — “$15,000 to $60,000”, “$120 to $200 an hour” — traces back to an agency asserting its own rate card with no methodology behind it. Clutch’s Toronto Shopify directory lists rate bands, but they’re self-reported by the agencies themselves.
So rather than repeat someone else’s guess, here’s what the work actually consists of, with scope and timeline in a single view. Most guides give you one or the other.
| Scope | What’s included | Typical cost (CAD) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter store | Premium theme configured, up to 25 products, standard checkout, payment and shipping setup | $3,500 – $7,000 | 2 – 3 weeks |
| Standard build | Custom-configured theme, up to 200 products, custom collections, email integration, 3–5 apps | $7,500 – $15,000 | 4 – 7 weeks |
| Custom build | Bespoke theme development, product configurators, inventory or ERP integration, multi-currency | $15,000 – $40,000+ | 8 – 16 weeks |
| Platform migration | Moving from WooCommerce, Magento or Squarespace including products, customers, orders and URL redirects | $5,000 – $20,000 | 3 – 8 weeks |
The variable that moves these numbers most isn’t design — it’s data. A 25-product store is a fundamentally different job from a 2,000-SKU catalogue with variants, and a migration that has to preserve order history and search rankings is different again from a fresh build.
What we consistently see at MapilitMedia
The second biggest variable is how ready your content is. Projects where product photography, descriptions and pricing are finalised before kickoff consistently land at the lower end of both the cost and timeline bands. Unfinished content is the single most common reason a build runs long.

Your Real Year-One Budget
Most cost guides quote a build price and stop, which makes the development fee look like the whole story. It isn’t. Here’s a realistic first-year picture for a Toronto store on the Grow plan doing $20,000 CAD a month:
| Line item | Year-one cost (CAD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Grow subscription | $1,188 | Annual billing at $99/mo |
| Premium theme | $140 – $580 | One-time. Theme Store lists 1,248 paid themes at US$100–420 |
| Apps | $600 – $2,400 | Varies enormously — price your specific apps, don’t trust averages |
| Card processing (2.6% + 30¢) | ~$6,960 | On $240,000 annual card revenue across ~2,400 orders |
| Standard build | $7,500 – $15,000 | One-time |
| Year one total | ~$16,400 – $26,100 | Recurring after year one: roughly $8,700 – $10,500 |
That processing figure assumes an average order around $100, which puts you at roughly 2,400 orders for the year — the 30¢ flat fee scales with order count, not revenue, so a store selling many small items pays proportionally more of it.
Two things this table makes clear. First, the build is roughly half of year one and then disappears — the ongoing cost of running the store is far smaller than the launch cost. Second, payment processing outweighs your subscription by nearly six to one. That’s why the Interac and Shopify Payments decisions above matter more than which plan you pick.
A note on app cost figures
The numbers circulating online for average Shopify app spend are mutually contradictory — we found sources claiming a $120/month average alongside sources claiming only 1.82% of stores spend over $100, which cannot both be true. Price the specific apps you need from their own listings instead of budgeting from an average.

Why Most Stores Lose Sales at Checkout
Building the store is the easy half. Getting people through checkout is where the money is, and the data on why they leave is unambiguous.
The Baymard Institute maintains a long-run benchmark of cart abandonment drawn from 50 studies between 2006 and 2025, currently sitting at 70.22%. More useful than the headline number is the breakdown of why:
Four of those five reasons are fixable during a build. Surfacing shipping costs early, offering guest checkout, trimming the form, and displaying trust signals at the payment step are all configuration and design decisions — not platform limitations.
Baymard also found the average checkout contains 23.48 form elements when 12 to 14 is sufficient. If your current store asks for more than it needs, that’s measurable revenue sitting on the table.
Is Shopify the Right Call for Your Toronto Business?
Canadian e-commerce keeps growing. Statistics Canada reported retail e-commerce sales of $5.7 billion in June 2026, up 9.9% month over month, now representing 7.7% of total retail trade — up from 7.1% the month before.
Shopify is a strong fit if you want to launch quickly, you don’t want to manage hosting or security patching, and your catalogue fits within its structure. It’s a weaker fit if you need deep content marketing alongside commerce, heavy custom functionality, or full control over your data and hosting — which is where WooCommerce tends to win.
MapilitMedia builds on both, so we’ll tell you honestly which one your project belongs on rather than selling you the one we’d prefer to build.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Shopify store cost to build in Toronto?
A starter Shopify store with a configured premium theme and up to 25 products typically runs CAD $3,500–$7,000 and takes 2–3 weeks. A standard build with custom collections and app integrations runs $7,500–$15,000 over 4–7 weeks. Fully custom builds with bespoke theme development or ERP integration start around $15,000. Note that no independent published benchmark exists for Canadian Shopify agency rates — every figure online is self-reported by agencies.
How much does Shopify cost per month in Canada?
In September 2026, Shopify Canada charges $49 CAD/month for Basic, $132 for Grow, and $517 for Advanced on monthly billing. Annual billing drops those to $37, $99, and $389 respectively — roughly 25% cheaper. Shopify Plus starts at $3,400 CAD/month. These are higher than the USD figures most pricing guides quote, so budget from the Canadian page.
Can I avoid Shopify’s transaction fees?
You can’t avoid card processing rates, but you can avoid the extra third-party gateway fee by using Shopify Payments. That fee is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus — roughly $4,800 CAD a year on $20,000/month in sales if you’re on Basic. Canadian merchants also get Interac at 0% + 15¢ for in-person sales, far cheaper than the 2.6% card rate.
How long does it take to build a Shopify store?
Two to three weeks for a starter store, four to seven weeks for a standard build, and eight to sixteen weeks for a fully custom store. Migrations from WooCommerce or Magento typically take three to eight weeks depending on catalogue size and whether order history needs preserving. The biggest delay factor is unfinished content — projects with final product photography and copy ready at kickoff consistently finish faster.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
Almost certainly not, if you’re a Toronto small or medium business. Plus starts at $3,400 CAD/month and is built for high-volume merchants needing checkout customisation, multiple storefronts, or dedicated support. The transaction rate saving alone doesn’t justify it — even the jump from Grow to Advanced only breaks even above roughly $145,000 CAD/month in card sales.
The Honest Summary
Shopify’s platform costs in Canada are higher than the internet tells you, payment processing will cost you more than your subscription, and nobody publishing “Shopify development cost” content has a defensible number for the build itself.
What you can plan around is the shape of the spend. Budget roughly $16,000–$26,000 CAD for year one on a standard build at moderate volume, expect about $8,700–$10,500 annually after that, and recognise that the Shopify Payments and Interac decisions will affect your margin more than which plan you choose.
If you want a quote grounded in your actual catalogue rather than a range from a blog post, that’s a conversation worth having.
